Hi,

My name is Jacob Mays and I know first hand how frustrating using SPSS can be. Back when I first learned SPSS as a graduate student in 1993, I had major trouble figuring out which statistical analysis to run given a specific research question. Then once I finally figured it out, I had difficulty interpreting the results and writing it in APA format. I wasn’t doing well in my statistics class at all. The only thing that saved me from failing the class was the passing of my mother in the middle of the semester. The professor gave me an incomplete and I would have to retake the class in the spring.

I was given a second chance. I was panicking. I couldn’t rely on the professor for help because his office hours were taken up by scores of other students. So, I read a couple of step-by-step books I found on SPSS. I studied these books at least 10 hours a day during my 3 week winter break. I would do the exercises repeatedly until I knew them like the back of my hand. My hard work paid off. I got an A in my statistics class that spring. In fact, I became so good in SPSS and statistics, that a year later, my statistics professor made me the project manager of his 1.3 million dollar research grant. This grant paid for my tuition and provided me with a $15,000 stipend!

Sixteen years later, I’ve leveraged my skills in SPSS and research to become the head of market research in the B2B division of a fortune 500 company. I receive questions about SPSS from both students and professionals. However, it’s difficult to help people with SPSS when you are not at the same location. So, I decided to create web site containing video tutorials on how to use SPSS.

SPSSVideoTutor.com has since evolved to become more than a web site with step-by-step video instructions. It is now a place where students and professionals can get personal help with SPSS, statistics and research projects, from classroom assignment to master’s thesis and doctoral dissertations.

Many have already begun to leverage my experience with SPSS, statistics and research. Here are a few emails from those I’ve helped.

Dear Mr. Mays,
I just wanted to write and say “thank you” for all of your help. You helped me accomplish one of the most important goals in my life – receiving a master’s degree in psychology. You took the time to make [custom] videos for me that explained everything I needed to know for my statistics exam, using spss. Actually, you helped me when others wouldn’t and that means more to me than you will ever know. You are absolutely the best stats/spss instructor I’ve ever had!!! Again, Thank you very much.
- Deborah W.

Hi Jacob!
I survived Statistics and made it through with an A thanks to you. I also didn’t get the A in Research Methods but I will settle for the B because it could have gone the other way.
I have also since emailed the [web site] to several of my friends who are struggling with statistics and SPSS…
Thanks again…you are an angel sent by God!

- Varsty M.

I informed my advisor that without your help, I would still be in the” bottom of the mine shaft”. I learned more from your videos in an hour than I learned from my professor in a semester.
– Ron W.

Thanks so much for your prompt reply. And thanks for doing this site! I was so grateful to have found it!
- Allison F., Ph.D.

Jacob,
I must tell you, I have been emailing my advisors for 3 days now trying to get a response from them. You are incredible!!! I can’t express to you how much this means to me for you to help me with this.

- Michelle C.

You are unbelievable …where were you six years ago when I was fighting my way through my dissertation!!
- Karen G., Ph.D.
